Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Dasyuromorpha; Family: Dasyuridae; Genus: Smithopsis; Genus species: Smithopsis crassicaudata. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 60-90 mm; Weight: 10-20 g; Identification: The fat-tailed dunnart has dusty brown fur, large ears, and a short, swollen tail; Habitat: Woodlands, shrublands, plains and fields; Diet: Carnivore: insects, invertebrates; Reproduction: Fat-tailed dunnarts breed from July to February. Although the female has 8-10 teats in her pouch, only five of her offspring will survive to ten weeks of age; Social Structure: Both males and females are solitary. Groups of fat-tailed dunnarts may share nests during the fall and winter; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Because they get all of their water from their food, fat-tailed dunnarts never have to drink. Their short tails are used to store fat.
