Tanabe Chikuunsai I est à l'origine d'un lignage familial ininterrompu et toujours actif depuis plus d'un siècle. Il a formé de nombreux et prestigieux artistes dans la région du Kansai. Lui-même lettré dans la tradition chinoise (bunjin), il pratiquait l'art de l'ikebana et de la calligraphie, tout en étudiant la peinture chinoise et la cérémonie du thé sencha.

Iizuka Rōkansai est considéré comme le plus grand artiste de l'histoire de la vannerie de bambou. II a utilisé le bambou hōbichiku pour créer cette vannerie destinée à l'art de l'arrangement floral ikebana. Il l'a nommée «Tagonoura» d'après le nom d'une baie, aujourd'hui située dans la préfecture de Shizuoka, célébrée par un waka composé par le poète Yamabe no Akahito au cours de la période Nara (710-794). Pour les œuvres qu'il jugeait importantes, Rōkansai procédait à un croquis préliminaire.
