Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fenestrate bryozoans in limestone from the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The lace-like fossils seen here are fenestrate bryozoans. Bryozoans are sessile, benthic, colonial, filter-feeding lophophorates. They first appear as fossils in the Late Cambrian and are still alive today in the Holocene. Most bryozoans constructed a calcareous skeleton, which is readily preserved in the fossil record. Fossil bryozoan skeletons are often highly fragmented. Fenestrates have sheet-like skeletons with numerous windows ("fenestrae"). The fenestrates range from Ordovician to the Triassic.

Classification: Animalia, Lophophorata, Bryozoa, Stenolaemata, Fenestrata

Stratigraphy: St. Louis Limestone, Middle Mississippian

Locality: block in trailside wall at Hidden River Cave, town of Horse Cave, southern Kentucky, USA (~37° 10' 45.51" North latitude, 85° 54' 22.38" West longitude)
