Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1897, this Richardsonian Romanesque Revival-style church was designed by Franzheim, Giesey, and Faris for the congregation of First English Lutheran Church, which was founded in 1860. The building features a rough-hewn stone front facade, roman arched stained glass windows and double-hung stained glass windows, a front gable parapet, a short bell tower with a pyramidal hipped roof, a front entrance bay with an arched stained glass transom, red brick side and rear facades, decorative stone finials and pinnacles, and a small stone-clad addition at the east end of the front facade, which houses an elevator. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building no longer houses the First English Lutheran congregation, as, around 2020, it merged with Trinity Lutheran Church in South Wheeling, which had been founded in 1899 as an offshoot of the First English Lutheran Church congregation. The building presently houses the Life Hub Center, a homeless shelter, which purchased the building in 2023.
