Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The First Mark Building, 135 Delaware Avenue at West Mohawk Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. One of downtown Buffalo's finest examples of the International Style's 1950s and '60s-era iteration - i.e. so-called "Midcentury Modernism" - the First Mark Building was designed by architect Howard Bell and was completed in 1961. The façade boasts curtain walls on three sides that are framed in white Vermont marble, with a repetitive fenestration pattern of rectangular windows framed with steel and interspersed vertically by blue metal mullions and occasional marble piers. Underneath is found a covered entry terrace that once contained a sculpture by local artist Merlin Stone. By way of contrast, the building's north elevation is framed in blue ceramic-glazed brick and once adjoined a two-story portion of the Buffalo Electric Company building. The First Mark Building comprises 75,000 square feet of office space on five floors, and once contained a Marine Midland Bank (later HSBC) branch on its ground floor.
