Summary

[edit]
Description

Fletcheria (Pycnostylus) sp. - fossil corals in dolostone from the Silurian of Ohio, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

This rock sample is full of rugose corals. Rugosans, or "horn corals", are an extinct group - they only occur in Paleozoic rocks. Some rugosans were colonial, but most were solitary, with a calcitic skeleton that tapered to a point. The pointed end was in the seafloor sediments. A sea anemone-type organism (polyp) originally occupied the cup's living space at top. Coral polyps have numerous tentacles with stinging cells (nematocysts) that paralyze prey. Many corals have photosynthesizing microbes (zooxanthellae) living symbiotically within their tissues.

Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Rugosa, Pycnostylidae

Stratigraphy: Lockport Dolomite, Niagaran Series, Middle Silurian

Locality: Rockford Stone Company Quarry (now abandoned & flooded), 1.5 miles northwest of the town of Rockford, northern Mercer County, northwestern Ohio, USA. (40° 42' 29.10" North latitude, 84° 40' 01.28" West longitude)
