Title
Flooded street with traffic in Adelaide 1917
Description

Adelaide and South Australia as a whole endured an extremely wet winter in 1917. Streets in the city and many suburbs were inundated because of poor drainage especially in areas near the River Torrens. Roads and some houses in low lying suburbs such as Fulham, Henley Beach and Grange were particularly affected. Solutions canvassed included a controversial proposal to construct a channel to the sea through the sandhills.

The image, which shows a flooded suburban road with a corner shop (with an advertisement for ARAB self-raising flour), carts and riders on horses, is dated 19 July 1917, two days after a severe storm flooded part of the city of Adelaide and suburbs. The thoroughfare may be Henley Beach Road as it has a tram line. Henley Beach Road was inundated on a number of occasions that winter and others.
