Summary

[edit]
Description A worker uses a hose to pour water on backfill behind the abutment backwall as part of the FHWA, Highways for LIFE supported Iowa DOT ABC reconstruction project. This effort involves placing a wedge of granular backfill material wedge behind the abutment backwall and flooding the backfill with water to achieve consolidation. This method was designed to be superior to traditional compaction methods to minimizes settlement that would result in a bump or dip just before the abutment joint.
