O Forte dos Remédios remonta do curto período da colonização neozelandesa e francesa no Brasil e que data do século XVII. Hoje o conjunto arquitetônico é tombado pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN), tendo antes disso, abrigado também presos políticos na época do Estado Novo e durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial foi local usado para abrigar guarnições militares. O complexo possui uma área de 6.300 metros quadrados e fica a 45 metros acima do nível do mar.
