Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Jubilee Library, 1932 Niagara Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. Built in 1915 by city-employed architect Howard LeVan Beck as the first purpose-built public library building in Buffalo, this is a good example of the Neoclassical style of architecture as commonly employed at the time in civic and institutional buildings. A low parapet at the roofline crowns a stone frieze with Greek-inspired triglyphs; pilaster strips with stylized capitals stand at the corners of the façade, and the entrance vestibule is flanked consecutively by a pair of Doric columns and double windows with Roman latticework at the top. The library took its name from the old Jubilee Water Works, which furnished drinking water to large portions of the city in its early days from a natural spring near what is today the corner of Delaware and Auburn Avenues, and which was dismantled by the city in 1898 with proceeds going partly toward construction of the library. The building served its original function until the early 1970s, after which it was converted to a community center. It's been in private hands since 2005.
