Summary
[edit]DescriptionFort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine - 52600951489.jpg |
English: Fort McHenry was built between 1798 and 1800 to defend Baltimore's harbor.
Fort McHenry is best known for withstanding a 25-hour bombardment by the British in September 1814 during the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment from a nearby truce ship. When he saw the flag still flying in the dawn of September 14th after the siege, he was so moved that he began composing the poem "Defense of Fort M'Henry". When put to music, it became the United States National Anthem. The boys posing at the redoubt. |
