Description

Reconstruction of a fossil insect from the Cretaceous of Brazil. (exhibit signage, Orton Geology Museum, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA)

From exhibit signage:

The Crato Formation formed in shallow lakes in northeastern Brazil 110 million years ago (Early Cretaceous). The Crato is sometimes considered part of the Santana Formation, which is famous for concretions containing fossils of fish as well as plants, crocodiles, turtles, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs. The preservation is so good that some fish even have gut contents and muscle fibers preserved.

Giant water bug

Today, these insects live in fresh water where they prey on other insects and small vertebrates. This one lived 120 million years ago and is from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil.

Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Insecta, Hemiptera, Belostomatidae

Stratigraphy: Crato Formation, Santana Group, Aptian Stage, upper Lower Cretaceous

Locality: Chapada do Araripe, eastern Brazil
