Summary

[edit]
Description

Built in 1856, this Italianate-style house at 510 North Carroll Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was designed by August Kutzbock for Samuel R. Fox, a hardware merchant. In 1860 it became home to Napoleon Bonaparte Van Slyke, a banker, and his wife, Annie Van Slyke. Van Slyke was then cashier for the Dane County Bank and a regent of the University of Wisconsin. He was also involved in building the first city hall, establishing Forest Hill cemetery, and some questionable financial maneuvers. He lived here until his death in 1911.

The house features a sandstone exterior with a low-slope front and side gable roof, dentils and paired, ornate brackets at the eaves, extruded corner pilasters, decorative window trim surrounds, four-over-four double-hung windows, a front door with an arched transom and decorative trim surround, and ornate chimneys that echo the shape of the house itself. The walls are clad in local sandstone, laid in a German masonry style where large and small blocks alternate. The house was modified circa 1915, adding a rear wing and the present front porch.

The house is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
