The image taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) in June 2019 shows impressively above the center of the image the ice cap made of water ice, which was covered by a thin layer of carbon dioxide ice in winter and now also covers large areas of the Vastitas Borealis plain (up to about 70 degrees north). A dark, circumpolar "trough" in the middle of the ice cover marks the boundary between the permanent water ice cap and the carbon dioxide ice sheet. Within a few weeks, this winter ice sheet will sublimate (evaporate) again and the polar ice cap will shrink back to its summer extent of about 80 degrees north latitude. A thin veil of cloud stretches over vast dune fields of dark sand. More on this: www.dlr.de/content/de/artikel/news/2019/03/20190919_mars-... Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin, CC BY-SA 3.0 |
