Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Francis A. Kraft House, 53 Lexington Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. A two-and-a-half-story residence with exuberant Queen Anne detailing, the house features a prominent clipped front gable, a square tower with clipped corners dominating the west end of the building, and clapboard siding painted bright blue, accented by shingles on the upper level of the tower and crowning the bay window to the right of the entrance, with some nifty ornamental woodwork on the secondary gable. Dating to 1886, this was the longtime home of Francis A. Kraft (1853-1918). At the time of its construction, his main employer was the federal government, for whom he worked as assistant cashier and deputy collector of internal revenue at the custom house at Washington and Seneca Streets downtown. However, his true vocation was mortuary work: he was already serving a secondary function as municipal sexton, which led up to his resignation from the customs house and partnership with his father in the undertaking firm of Frank J. Kraft and Son. Kraft lived in the house until his own death.
