Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Francis Cornwell House, 232 Linwood Avenue at Bryant Street, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. One of the earliest houses to be built on verdant Linwood Avenue (and, naturally, a contributing property to the locally-listed and NRHP-eligible Linwood Historic District), the Cornwell House is a paragon of the Italianate Villa architectural style with its low-pitched hip roof (whose requisite cupola has since been removed), the carved wooden brackets supporting its widely overhanging eaves, and the Classical detailing (viz. Doric columns and pediment) adorning its full-width front porch. A native of Connecticut, Francis E. Cornwell (1822-1869) was an attorney turned rising star on the local political scene whose career ascent was cut tragically short by his death of typhoid fever on the same Election Day in which he emerged victorious in the race to fill a vacant seat on the State Supreme Court. Francis had only lived in the house for two years; his widow Catherine and their children would continue residing there until 1881. It's now divided into apartments.
