Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Frank A. Fox House, 79 14th Street, Buffalo, New York, August 2021. A splendid example of the Shingle Style as practiced by locally-based "society architect" Charles Day Swan, the eye of the observer of the Fox House is initially drawn to the enormous side gable of the roof, with a unique bow-shaped projection on the wall above the attic window and a pair of bays below. However, the most unusual feature of the house may not be obvious at first: look near the base of the chimney and you'll see a small leaded-glass window, topped with a pointed arch and framed with rough stone. The main entrance is found at the rear of a semi-enclosed terrace that makes up nearly half the width of the narrow façade and sports pleasant spindle balustrades. Frank Alton Fox (1844-1909) was one of the better-known figures in Buffalo financial circles, specializing in credit reporting: born in rural Lewis County, he moved to Buffalo with his wife Hattie and toddler son Arthur about 1874 and began his career in the local offices of R. G. Dun & Company before striking out on his own as founding president of the Rating Exchange company. Fox lived in the house from its completion in 1890 until his death, and his widow remained there until her own death in 1915.
