Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Frank H. Pfonner Public Safety Building, 1835 Sheridan Drive, Tonawanda, New York, March 2022. Home to the town court and police headquarters (and, originally, also the fire alarm headquarters and municipal civil defense services), the building was designed by the local architectural firm of Trevor W. Rogers & Associates, who furnished a sprawling two-story edifice clad in a mix of brick and concrete sash panels, with the sleek lines, smooth textures, and preponderance of right angles that's requisite of the International Style. Intended to replace an earlier building on Delaware Avenue that's now home to a Catholic Charities office, the 13-month construction process began in March 1971, cost $1.6 million, and was undertaken by J. Migliore Construction. The building was most recently remodeled in 2021, and at the behest of Tonawanda town supervisor Joseph Emminger, it was renamed to honor Frank Pfonner (1893-1923), one of the original three officers hired in 1920 to staff the town's then-newly founded police department, who was killed three years later in a hit-and-run accident by a still-unidentified driver. (According to local rumor, Pfonner was intentionally run down by a bootlegger.)
