Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Frank Sickels House, 119 Oakland Place, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. One of the oldest extant houses on the street, this two-and-a-half-story beauty dates to 1891 and was the design of an unknown architect. The style is a hybrid one: the large frontal gable with the lovingly restored foliate ornamentation at its peak represent the Queen Anne style to the hilt, while the Tuscan columns on the reconstructed porch add a Colonial Revival element to the mix. Original owner Frank E. Sickels (1860-1920) was a Buffalo attorney who was also active as the historian of the local chapter of the YMCA, authoring in 1902 a tome entitled Fifty Years of the Young Men's Christian Association of Buffalo. Subsequent owners include attorney James Ford and his wife Caroline (who resided there until their deaths in 1905 and 1924 respectively); surgeon Dr. Alfred H. Clark and his wife, socialite and philanthropist Laura (1927 through 1972; historically insensitive alterations executed by them include the removal of the original porch, the replacement of the clapboard façade with stucco, and a complete interior remodel), and attorney Robert Moriarty (through 2006; he and his wife Peggy reversed most of the aforementioned alterations and restored the house to its former splendor).
