Summary
[edit]DescriptionFrank Sprada House, Buffalo, New York - 20200528.jpg |
English: The Frank Sprada House, 197 Playter Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. This two-and-a-half-story brick dwelling is one of architect Władysław Zawadzki's relatively few surviving residential commissions, executed in a style that's much different from his unusual distinctive take on the Renaissance Revival: this is a pretty standard Queen Anne design not too different from neighboring houses (nor from the also Zawadzi-designed Dekowski House on Sweet Avenue), accentuated with a few Neoclassical details such as lintels above the windows. An intact Neoclassical-style portico existed as of 2004 but has since been removed. Born in Poznan, Franciszek "Frank" Sprada (1857-1939) immigrated to America in 1887 or '88 with his wife Augusta (1858-1914) and the first three of what would eventually be their seven children, settling in Buffalo and working first as an industrial laborer and later as a self-employed florist. He had this house built for him in 1910, and moved out of it shortly after his 1923 marriage to his second wife, Alexandra née Kortykowski. It's now been divided into apartments. |
