Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Franklin W. Caulkins House, 415 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York, June 2020. One of the finest examples in Buffalo of the Stick style, the salient features here are the half-timbering on the upper stories of the façade, the band of fishscale shingles separating said upper stories from the brick-faced ground floor, and - above all - the dazzling Eastlake-style woodwork on the posts and balustrades of the asymmetrical post as well as on the bargeboard above the oriel-style dormer window. The house was designed in 1882 by Franklin Wellington Caulkins, Jr. (1855-1940) as his own home, though he appears to only have lived there for a few years. One of Buffalo's earlier homegrown architects of note, Caulkins' rather unusual specialty was acoustics: it was said of him in 1886 that "of seventeen churches which he has designed, not one has failed to be acoustically perfect". It's now law offices.
