Description

Postcard of the Grand Pier Pavilion, Herne Bay, Kent in rough sea, 1910-1913.

The Grand Pier Pavilion was completed in 1910 and burned down in 1970. The photographer was Fred C. Palmer of Tower Studio, Herne Bay, Kent, who is believed to have died 1936-1939.

Points of interest
  • On this coast, the prevailing wind is north-westerly, although equinoctial gales come from the east. The camera is looking north, and the pier goes out in a northerly direction from the seafront. So the big wave is apparently bursting through under the pier from the west side.
  • It cannot have been easy to take a well-focused photo with glass negative, wooden camera and tripod in those conditions. There is little shelter from wind and rain where Palmer was standing.
