Description

Unfolded inside of the carnation master's retable in the Franciscan church in Fribourg, Switzerland. The central part depicts the group of crucifixion flanked by Franciscan saints. The left wing shows the birth of Christ. The painting is signed with a red and a white carnation. This signature provides a notation for the as yet unknown authorship. The right wing depicts the Adoration of the Magi. Both scenes are set in an identical frame in front of a stable, which occupies the left-hand side of the composition. In the background is a landscape reminiscent of the Fribourg Pre-Alps and above it a golden damask background. The hem of the Virgin Mary's cloak is decorated on both panels with a text in Gothic capital letters from the Ave Maria and the Salve Regina.

The officially commissioned painter Albrecht Nentz from Rottweil, who worked in Solothurn, died at the end of July 1479, when he had only just applied the primer to the panels. The Basel artist Barthelemy Rutenzweig then took over the commission. He delegated part of the work to one or more journeymen, including Palus de Strasbourg, who may have been Paul Löwensprung. They signed with a red and a white carnation, hence the makeshift nickname of the Carnation Master for the artists of this work. The style corresponds to that of the High Rhine with more or less direct influence from Roger van der Weyden. The paintings of the wings show similarities with the circle of artists around Martin Schongauer; in particular, the Adoration of the Magi depicted here appears to be inspired by an engraving by Martin Schongauer.

The most important painter of this winged altarpiece is the Nelkenmeister, who painted the Annunciation, St Clare (on the outside), St Elisabeth (on the outside) and the angel concert of the Nativity and by whom there is no other known work in Switzerland. Marcel Strub describes this altarpiece as the masterpiece of Swiss painting in the second half of the 15th century. Together with the wings not reproduced here, it is the largest altarpiece from this period to have survived in Switzerland.

Object history
