Fresco depicting Europa and the bull

Roman, Pompeii, House of Jason, AD 20-40

Fresco

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli MANN 111475

The walls of the triclinium (dining room) and of other rooms were covered in frescoes, some of which depicted large mythological scenes.

According to Greek mythology, Europa, the first queen of Crete, was seduced by the god Zeus, who had as sumed the form of a handsome bull. In this fresco, her companions are similarly enamored of the beast. The hazy, dreamy background and small-scale figures allow us to date this painting to several decades before the eruption of Vesuvius.
