Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Jama Masjid of the Aligarh Muslim University. The Taj Mahal in Agra and the Jama Masjid at AMU share a fascinating connection, despite being constructed almost 250 years apart. During Shah Jahan's reign, several buildings were constructed, including the Taj Mahal. It is believed that Abdul Haq served as the master calligrapher for most of these buildings.

One of Shah Jahan’s queen named Akbarabadi Begum or Aiza-un-Nisa commissioned the construction of a mosque in Delhi around the same time as the Taj Mahal's construction. The calligraphy in this mosque which was known as Akbarabadi masjid was also done by Abdul Haq Unfortunately, this mosque was demolished by the British after the 1857 revolt. The remains of the mosque were sold to a dealer and eventually purchased by Suleman Jah Bahadur. These remains were then presented to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of AMU.

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, planned to use its remains in the construction of Jama Masjid at AMU. These white marbles with black calligraphy from the Holy Quran were incorporated into the Jama Masjid. Thus, the calligraphy in AMU's Jama Masjid represents the work of the same artisan who worked on the Taj Mahal and other Mughal structures.
