Summary[edit]
DescriptionFrost polygons in ground (Gardner Lake trailhead, Beartooth Mountains, Wyoming, USA) 9.jpg |
English: The ground seen here is in the Beartooth Mountains along the Montana-Wyoming border. The cracks formed as the soil experienced numerous freeze-thaw cycles in alpine to subalpine tundra conditions. The resulting crack-defined structures are called "frost polygons", which are one specific type of "patterned ground" formed by frost heaving.
Locality: ground near the Gardner Lake trailhead, southern side of Route 212 / Beartooth Highway, northwestern Wyoming, USA Info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patterned_ground and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frost_heaving |
