Summary[edit]

Description
English: The 147 year history of the garrison at Fort Moultrie, Charleston, South Carolina began with palmetto logs and sand in 1776 when the guns of the fort turned back an attack by British ships. As years passed, the fort was refitted and fortified to protect the Charleston harbor and even serve as a prison for Native American prisoners like Seminole Indian fighter Osceola. After being retrofitted for World War II homeland defenses, Fort Moultrie was retired in 1947.
