FUKUJI DAM SECOND PHASE CONSTRUCTION - Construction officially began May 18 of the second and final phase of the $12 million Fukuji Dam project which will increase Okinawa's water reservoir storage capacity tenfold. Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey, Government of the Ryukyu Islands Chief Executive Chobyo Yara, Ryukyu Domestic Water Corporation (RDWC) President Hirosada Oham, and Oshiro Constriction Company President Kamakichi Oshiro participated in a ground-breaking ceremony at the dam site in Higashi-son, northeastern Okinawa. The second phase will begin as the first phase nears completion. Both phases are financed with United States funds. The reservoir, which will be fed by rainfall over a watershed area of 7,700 acres, will impound some 10 billion gallons of water. The second phase contract awarded March 23 to the Oshiro firm calls for construction of a 260-foot high embankment, approximately 1,000 feet thick at the bottom, tapering to 40 feet in width at the top. It will be 850 feet in length across the top of the dam, surmounted by a 39-foot-wide highway. The structure will consist of 2.2 million cubic yards of compacted earth-rock fill. The contract also includes construction of a 100-foot-wide overflow spillway and a 150-foot-long overpass bridge. The initial phase of the project, begun in July 1969, is nearing completion by the Asian-American Construction Company. This phase is for construction of a diversion tunnel 1,100 feet long and 13 feet in diameter, access roads leading to the dam site, and development of a quarry site for the embankment materials.

福地ダム第二期工事 沖縄のダムの総貯水量を10倍に増やす総工費1,200万ドルの福地ダム計画第二期及び最終工事が5月18日正式に着工された。沖縄本島北東部、東村の現場での起工式にはフィアリー民政官、屋良行政主席、大浜琉球水道公社総裁、大城鎌吉大城組社長が出席した。第二期工事は、第一期工事がほとんど完了したので開始されるもの。両工事とも米国資金で行われる。同水源地は集水面積7,700エーカーで100億ガロン貯水が可能である。第二期工事は大城組が落札、3月23日契約が行われた。工事はダムの本体工事でダムの高さ260フィート、基底部で幅1,000フィート、頂上部は幅40フィートで幅39フィート、全長850フィートの道路がつくられる。ダムの体積は220万立方ヤードでアース・ロックでつくられる。100フィート幅の余水吐、全長150フィートの橋がかけられる。第一期工事はアジア・アメリカン会社によって、1969年7月に開始された。これは、全長1,100フィート、直径13フィートの分水トンネル、ダムに通ずる道路、築堤工事用採石場の建設であった。 1970年5月18日
