| Description |
English: Built in 2009 as part of the TV series “James May’s Toy Stories”, this fibreglass Spitfire is an accurate 1:1 scale representation of the original 1:72 scale Airfix Spitfire kit, as released in 1955. The replica even carries the original markings and colour scheme as portrayed in the kit.
It may not be a particularly accurate replica of a Spitfire, but it IS an accurate replica of an Airfix Spitfire, just much, much bigger! Gateguards(UK)Ltd produced the parts used in construction, and later added strengthening to allow the aircraft to go on permanent display. It is currently on display in Hangar 1 at the RAF Museum Cosford, Shropshire, UK. 14th August 2016 P.S. Having thought about this, I suspect it is technically a 72:1 scale representation of the original Airfix kit. However I have labelled it as 1:1 as this corresponds to an actual Spitfire! |
