Description
Srpski (latinica): Rasprostranjen je u južnoj i centralnoj Evropi, južnoj, jugoistočnoj i delovima centralne i istočne Azije, na delovima Bliskog Istoka i Male Azije, kao i u većem delu podsaharske Afrike, Severne i Južne Amerike. Postoji više podvrsta. U Evropi je selica, zimuje uglavnom u podsaharskoj Africi, a izuzetno retko pojedine ptice prezimljuju i severnije (čak i u Panonskoj niziji). Naseljava različite ravničarske vodene ekosisteme (jezera, bare, močvare, mtrvaje, ribnjake i sl). Gnezdi se kolonijalno na obalama jezera, reka i močvara, najčešće u trsci, rogozu, žbunju ili niskom drveću. Ptice su najaktivnije noću, kada se i hrane. U ishrani su zastupljene ribe, žabe, vodeni insekti, retko ptice (pevačice koje noće u trsci ili mladunci u gnezdima) i sitni sisari. U Evropi je populacija uglavnom stabilna. Najbrojnija je vrsta čaplji u Srbiji, populacija je procenjena na 2.800–3.820 parova, i u blagom je porastu (Puzović et al 2015).
