Description

Garnetiferous metaperidotite (3.8 cm across at its base) from Michigan, USA.

This is a sample of mantle rock that occurred as a xenolith in a northern Michigan kimberlite. This is metamorphosed garnetiferous peridotite. The red crystals are garnet. The dark-colored crystals are pyroxene. The light greenish-gray areas are mesh/reticulate-textured serpentine (formerly olivine).

Geology: xenolith in the diatreme facies of the Lake Ellen Kimberlite (undetermined age, but host kimberlite is Early Jurassic - 180 Ma)

Locality: at or near hilltop between Michigamme Reservoir & Lake Ellen-Little Lake Ellen (approximately N1/2 N1/2 NW1/4 Sec. 34, Kiernana 7.5' USGS topographic quadrangle), far-eastern Iron County, western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA
