Gate-Shadow Tinged with the sky’s ambient light, The lines are blue on chalky ground, Their penumbras like black opal. Horizontals are molten, moulded To ruts in the road. Uprights elongate, Conform in proportion, submit: Cotangent to the sun’s elevation. Diagonals converge: gunsights On the source. It blinds the mind, Dazzles it with orbs and flares, tips Perception sideways. I baulk, recover, Step forward, open wide the gate. Poem by Giles Watson, 2012. Shadows have a bluish tinge because of Rayleigh Scattering. The struts of the gate block the light of the sun, but they do not block the blue-coloured ambient light of the sky. The penumbra is the part of a shadow in which the light source is only partially occluded by an opaque object; it can be seen in the shadows in this photograph as a slightly fainter haze surrounding the darker umbra. The length of a shadow is proportional to the cotangent of the elevation angle of the sun. |
