À proximité du Globe de la science et de l’innovation du CERN, Genève, Suisse "L’œuvre d’art, qui représente un immense ruban se déroulant sur 11 mètres de hauteur, rend hommage aux grandes découvertes en physique à travers les âges. Le long des 37 mètres du ruban d’acier, sur sa face extérieure, les noms de 396 découvertes ont été gravés au laser, dans leur langue d’origine. Sont indiqués également le nom de l’auteur de chaque découverte, l’année, et le domaine concerné – physique, astrophysique ou mathématiques. La première inscription, située à la base de la sculpture, est rédigée en écriture cunéiforme et fait référence au calcul sexagésimal des anciens Mésopotamiens, vers 1500 av. J.-C. Suivent des références en grec, à propos des anciens théoriciens, comme Archimède, auxquelles succèdent des indications en chinois, en sanskrit et en arabe. La face interne de la sculpture est gravée par électrolyse avec les mêmes découvertes, représentées cette fois par leur symbole scientifique : des cartes du ciel des anciens Babyloniens et des équations algébriques, notamment le théorème de Pythagore et le fameux E=mc2 d’Einstein et, point culminant, l’équation lagrangienne complexe décrivant le Modèle standard de la physique des particules. « Le ruban en acier s’élève de la Terre telle une route sinueuse infinie. Comme la science, nul ne sait où elle mènera », déclare Bernard Pellequer du CERN, qui est à l’origine de ce projet. Cette œuvre a été conçue par l’artiste canadienne Gayle Hermick, et a été financée par une donation exclusive de la Fondation Meyrinoise du Casino.
