Summary

[edit]
Description

The place of the early fights of WW II. At 4.45 AM on 1st of September 1939 German battleship Schleswig-Holstein began to fire upon Westerplatte. These were arguably the first shots of WW II.

Flowers with Polish and German flags laid today before the dawn at the exact anniversary of the Nazi-German assault on Poland. In the middle is the grave of Mjr. Henryk Sucharski - commander in the first few days of August 1939. Due to his nervous breakdown, the command was taken by Cpt. Franciszek Dąbrowski.

Sadly, bronze plates on the monuments were stolen many times. Today they are made of some kind of plastic that imitate metal.
