English: U.S. Navy General Motors FM-1 Wildcat fighters of Composite Squadron 41 (VC-41) from USS Corregidor (CVE-58) over Butaritari Island, Makin Atoll, during pre-invasion bombardment, 20 November 1943. The photo looks to the east, with Flink Point in lower center and beach "red" at lower right. Heavy smoke is from oil fires in the vicinity of the King's Warf. The nearest plane was piloted by Lieutenant G.V. Knudson, USNR, of VC-41. |
