Summary[edit]

Description

Geodes are small to large, subspherical to irregularly-shaped, crystal-lined cavities in rocks. They form when water enters a void in a host rock and precipitates crystals. The most common geode-lining mineral is quartz.

The cracked geode shown here is from the Fort Payne Formation, a fossiliferous shale-and-limestone unit in the Lower Mississippian of Kentucky and Tennessee. Geodes are relatively common in this unit. Geode-lining minerals observed at this site were quartz, calcite, and dolomite.

Locality: roadcut on the southern side of Route 90, just west of Burkesville, Kentucky, USA (36° 47’ 58.30” North latitude, 85° 22’ 58.20” West longitude)
