Summary
[edit]DescriptionGeophonephoto.jpg |
English: A geophone, photographed following the Ohio premiere performance of w:Des canyons aux étoiles… by w:Olivier Messiaen. This geophone is essentially a medium-sized single-headed tom-tom, placed upside-down and filled with several dozen pellets of w:lead shot, marbles, pebbles, xylophone mallet heads, and a variety of other small spherical and ovoid objects.
This geophone was assembled for this performance by Oberlin Conservatory of Music visiting professor of percussion w:Allen Otte, and was played by one of the members of The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble's percussion section (Ryan Packard, David Vohden, Jake Harkins, Ed Atkinson, and Ben Bacon). The "CCM" marked in black magic marker on the inside of the drum stands for "w:University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music," where Otte has been a professor of percussion for many years. Allen Otte wrote the following about this instrument to the uploader of this photo (in an email dated 13 December 2008): Photo taken following a concert at Warner Concert Hall, in Bibbins Hall, w:Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, w:Ohio, w:United States. The performing group was The Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, dir. w:Timothy Weiss. |
