Jacob Arenfeldt (1723-1788) was a Danish naval officer, who eventually rose to the rank of rear admiral. He is portrayed with his son, also named Jacob Arenfeldt (1755-1820), who likewise rose to rear admiral. The age of the younger Arenfeldt would date the painting to probably the 1760s.
