CAMP TAJI, Iraq, June 14, 2011 - Maj. Gen. William T. Nesbitt, Georgia's Adjutant General, and Command Sgt. Maj. James Nelson, the State's Command Sergeant Major, visit Citizen-Soldiers of the 171st Aviation and Detachment 1, Company C, 1st of the 111th General Aviation Support Brigade deployed in support of Operation New Dawn in Iraq. While the 171st – which is operating out of Camp Taji – is moving troops and supplies for American and other coalition forces, the 111th – operating out of Combat Outpost Adder near Tallil – is providing MEDEVAC support to those forces as part of the active Army’s 40th and 29th Combat Aviation brigades. Both units are home-stationed at Clay National Guard Center across the flight ramp from Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Ga., and both are part of the Georgia Army Guard’s 78th Aviation Troop Command. The primary reasons for making such trips, said Nelson, are to “provide General Nesbitt and myself firsthand knowledge of the missions in which our fellow Citizen-Soldiers are participating, and the opportunity to observe the welfare of the Soldier and address any issue they may have. It is also to let them know the senior leadership is proud of what they are doing, and appreciate the sacrifices they and their families are making during this deployment." |
