Summary[edit]

Description First broadside printing of the 1812 cartoon "The Gerry-mander", which led to the coining of the word "Gerrymander" in the English language. (This is not the very first publication of the cartoon, which was in a Boston newspaper.) The map shows an electoral district in Essex County, Massachusetts, with fanciful wings, claws, etc. attached. Below the cartoon is a mock-scholarly commentary, pretending to consider the Gerry-mander as a rare or semi-mythical beast.
