Description This is a painting of the Danish zoologist Japetus Steenstrup (1813-1897). It was made as a study for Krøyer's painting of the members of the w:Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters ("Videnskabernes Selskab), painted 1896-98. Normally, these studies were sold to the portrayed persons, but Steenstrup died in 1897, and his family did not want the painting. So that is probably how it ended up in Munich.
