Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gloucester Cathedral (Holy Trinity), Gloucestershire, September 1978. Essentially Norman (1089-1160) but quire and transepts remodelled c.1340 in the earliest instance of the Perpendicular style whilst the West End was rebuilt in 1430 in Perpendicular style. In addition, the central tower and Lady Chapel are also Perpendicular but later (c.1460). There are some 13th Century Early English elements (nave vault) and early 14th Century Decorated (some windows). It is possible that the Perpendicular style was 'invented' by the Gloucester masons but it is also possible that the King's Mason, Thomas of Canterbury, may have been responsible. Scanned slide.
