Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), German writer - <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Wolfgang_von_Goethe</a>

This monument to Goethe by German sculptor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Michael_Schwanthaler" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Ludwig Michael Schwanthalers</a> (1802-1848) was unveiled on October 22, 1844. After having been badly damaged in WWII, it was buried at the site for protection, and subsequently taken to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebieghaus" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Liebieghaus</a> sculpture museum. From 1952 until 2007 the memorial stood in Gallus-Anlage. When the Goetheplatz was re-designed, the newly restored Goethe monument was returned to its accustomed place.

The relief work on the base portrays allegorical figures from the spheres of science as well as dramatic and lyrical poetry.
