[edit]DescriptionGooch (of Clewer, Berkshire) arms.svg | Arms of Gooch of Clewer Park, Berkshire, baronets (created 1866): Per pale argent and sable, on a chevron between three talbots passant two escallops all counter-changed on a chief engrailed gules a wheel between two leopard's faces or (Montague-Smith, P.W. (ed.), Debrett's Peerage, Baronetage, Knightage and Companionage, Kelly's Directories Ltd, Kingston-upon-Thames, 1968, p.337) (A difference of Gooch of Mettingham, Suffolk, from which family was descended Gooch of Benacre Hall, Suffolk, baronets (created 1746)). The 1st Baronet, of Clewer, was Chairman of the Great Western Railway, who was granted the baronetcy for his services in laying the "Atlantic Cables" of 1865 and 1866, (Debrett's, p.337) under-sea cables, hence probably the elements of the wheel and escallops, differences to the arms of Gooch of Mettingham. |
