Description
Nederlands: Johan Wilhelm Kaiser (1813-1900) was de zoon van de Duitse immigranten Johan Wilhelm Kaiser en Anna Sebilla Liernur. In 1843 trouwde hij in Zwolle met Johanna Buisman (1821-1907), dochter van Derk Buisman en Johanna Overmars. Vanaf 1827 volgde hij tekenlessen aan de Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, waar hij later zelf docent werd. Hij werkte als boekillustrator, ontwerper en graveur. Zo ontwierp en graveerde hij in 1851 en 1864 de eerste en tweede serie postzegels voor Nederland en voor

Nederlands-Indië. In 1859 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van de graveerschool. Bij de oprichting van de Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 1870 werd hij hoogleraar aan deze instelling. In 1873 werd hij tevens directeur van het Rijksmuseum. Beide functies hield hij aan tot zijn pensioen in 1883. Uit hun huwelijk werden acht kinderen geboren. De oudste zoon en naamgenoot (1847-1920) werd kunstschilder. Hun jongste dochter Aletta Catharina (1858-1931) trouwde op 15 juli 1881 met de Leidse hoogleraar natuurkunde en latere Nobelprijswinnaar Hendrik Antoon Lorentz.

Vanaf het midden van de negentiende eeuw werden huwelijkspenningen met portretten van het bruidspaar ‘en profil’ populair. Meestal staat daarbij de man voorop. Menger heeft er in dit geval voor gekozen om Johanna Buisman voorop te zetten.
