Kontext (S. 3): "Bei einer muhammedanischen Bevölkerung muß folgender Brauch auffallen. In Kaschgar findet man an vielen muhammedanischen Gräbern eine oder mehrere Puppen (Fig. 1) aufgestellt, die roh aus einem Stabe und einigen darum gewundenen Lumpen zusammengesetzt sind – das Gesicht ist roh durch ein paar Striche angedeutet. Diese Puppen heißen ǧinn (a. plur., [...]); man bringt ihnen, besonders zur Zeit des Festes, allerhand Speisen auf Tellern und in Näpfen, die später nicht wieder benutzt werden dürfen. Es scheint sich um eine Art Versöhnungsopfer zu handeln und unsere Leute, über diesen Brauch befragt, gerieten in Verlegenheit und schützten Unkenntnis vor. Tafel 1,4 zeigt den Fuß eines Grabes mit dort aufgestellten ǧinn und Näpfen." Dazu Fußnote 1 (S. 3): "Die Photographie und die Puppe verdanken wir der Güte der Miss Cresswell, die zur Zeit unseres letzten Besuches in Kaschgar (1914) im Hause des englischen Generalkonsulats Sir G. Macartney wohnte." |
