Description

Granite or granodiorite from the Early Cretaceous of California, USA. (~8.8 cm across at its widest)

This is a sample from the extensive Sierra Nevada Batholith of California. The batholith is a suite of intrusive igneous rocks representing old, cooled magma chambers that were originally beneath an ancient chain of subduction zone volcanoes.

Locality: loose piece from along Lower Rock Creek Road, just west of Rock Creek Gorge, northwest of the town of Bishop, Owens Valley, Mono County, eastern California, USA (37° 30' 39.62" North latitude; 118° 37' 25.78" West longitude)
