Summary
[edit]DescriptionGraphic granite (runite) (Eight Mile Park Pegmatite District, Mesoproterozoic, 1.430 to 1.474 Ga; roadcut along 3A Road, north of Royal Gorge Bridge, west of Canon City, south-central Colorado, USA) 1 (14979619926).jpg |
Graphic granite from the Precambrian of Colorado, USA. Mottled pinkish = K-feldspar (KAlSi3O8 - potassium aluminosilicate) Dark gray = quartz (SiO2 - silica) Graphic granite (a.k.a. runic granite; a.k.a. runite) has an odd but distinctive type of crystalline texture. Graphic granites are typically bimineralic and consist of interpenetrating crystals (quartz in potassium feldspar), in a way that somewhat resembles ancient cuneiform writing (“graphic”). Some observed examples resemble Arabic writing. These rocks occur in pegmatitic granite intrusions. Geologic unit & age: Eight Mile Park Pegmatite District, Mesoproterozoic, ~1.430-1.474 Ga Locality: 3A Road roadcut north of Royal Gorge Bridge, west of Canon City, south-central Colorado, USA |
