Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In Colon Honduras there is a source of Green Stone which has been used since pre-columbian times. This green stone is found in stones in the Paulaya River (River of Blood in Miskito) on the Colon, Gracias a Dios (Mosquitia) border where a large archaeological site called Tulito (little Tula) is found. Most preColumbian green stone artifacts in the area are small axe like goddesses with holes to be worn as a necklace, green stone beads, and green stone axe heads. At the time of the Spanish conquest there were three life size green stone goddesses in NE Honduras--Trujillo, Olancho, and the Bay Islands. The Spanish destroyed the green stone goddess in Trujillo after the head priest correctly prophecized the coming of the new Honduran governor appointed by the King of Spain and the head preist cut his hair and wept. Green Stone was exported by the Nahua speaking Indians of Northeastern Honduras to Costa Rica and to Mexico and has been found in the Trujillo área and also in Culmi área caves near the possible Ciudad Blanca area. Green stone was a resource that Moctezuma I wanted as tribute and so attacked Honduras. This is a modern Green Stone bird made by mulatto artisan Don Lencho from Corozalta outside of Trujillo. This bird is currently in the collection of the Burke Museum, University of Washington.
