Summary[edit]
DescriptionGreenwich Foot Tunnel. London (15609569124).jpg |
Photo description: From Left. Looking south: The entrance dome to the foot tunnel, A windy staircase takes you down to the tunnel, There is also a large lift that is often used by cyclists.. ( church In Background): St Alfege is the Anglican parish church in the centre of Greenwich. There has been a church here for over a thousand years, dedicated to the memory of Alfege, the Archbishop of Canterbury who was "martyred on this site"* in 1012. (* Not this Flickr site ) The middle photo is a shot inside the tunnel it is a bit better lit than this image portrays, I gave it a HRD rinse to pull out the tiling on the walls Right side photoShows the view from South of the river looking towards the Isle of Dogs. The other entry/exit dome is seen in front of Canary Wharf and other buildings that form part of the Complex. ( I removed a tower crane from this image ) The Tunnel was Designed by Sir Alexander Binnie, and opened to the public in August 1902 so that south London residents could go to work in the docks on the Isle of Dogs. The tunnel provides pedestrian access between Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich and Island Gardens, across the Thames river. The riverside at Island Gardens gives a splendid view of Maritime Greenwich. The tunnel is 1,217 feet long and runs about 50 feet under the River Thames. Two hundred thousand glazed white tiles line the tunnel walls. It cost £127,000 to build. ( About $192,062.10 at todays exchange ) I bet that would not even cover the cost of the tiles nowadays.... |
